Raccoons are responsible for more of these complaints than any other species because they readily den in people’s attics and chimneys. People with special licenses are allowed to remove raccoons and other wildlife that are causing damage. Raccoons are found throughout Canada except for some of the western provinces. They normally prefer the use of hollow trees, caves, or abandoned animal burrows for dens. Raccoons are interesting, curious, intelligent and often troublesome mammals. All raccoons are marked with a trademark black ‘mask’ around the eyes, and a heavily furred, ringed tail.
Raccoons are born without teeth and with eyes closed, and they weigh approximately 750 g. The eyes open at two weeks of age, and the teeth erupt at about 19 days. Raccoons are present in mountainous areas or coastal marshes. According to what raccoon facts say, raccoons are omnivorous and eat both plants and animals. Raccoons are also susceptible to a host of parasites and diseases, including rabies and canine distemper. In the late 1970s one of the largest known rabies epidemics associated with raccoons began in Virginia and North Carolina.
